January in the Mara

The Mara has received quite a lot of unseasonal rain this month greening up the plains. In the forest the Warburgia trees are fruiting drawing the elephant families into the camps and surrounding forests to feed. Topi and their calves are congregating on the southern plains there are wildflowers blooming, butterflies a plenty and birds feasting on the bounty of fruit. The lion prides are thriving with plenty of cubs in the Madomo and Paradise Prides and we have had lots of great leopard and cheetah sightings.

January at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge

We are getting used to our wonderful new look following on from our lodge refurbishment project last month. We hosted the board members from AWF who help set up the lodge for the community and have done so much for gorilla conservation, they were with us to attend the ceremony where 28 hectares of land were donated to increase the size of the national park under conservation. We are delighted to be part of this park expansion project and are growing 15,000 indigenous tree seedlings to help re-forest the local area.

December at Loldia House

Loldia has had a busy festive season hosting big family groups for both Christmas and New Year. The flamingoes have returned to Lake Nakuru in large numbers and we have been taking guests to explore the Mau Eburu Forest ecosystem, a beautiful wild indigenous forest which is one of Kenya's most important forest water towers.

December at Mfangano Island Camp

At Mfangano we hosted our first ever cycle challenge, mountain bikers arrived from all over Kenya to take part and cycle the two routes across the island in two days. The even was a huge success and we are certain to run this again this year. Guests have been enjoying some good fishing, bird and otter watching as well as relaxing at our beautiful island paradise and the permaculture gardens are going from strength to strength.

December in the Masai Mara

December has been a beautiful month in the Mara, warm days with the occasional rain shower and distant thunder showers have made the Mara green and given some spectacular photographic opportunities. Big herds of zebra cover the plains, elephant families move through the camps and out into the grasslands to feed, there are new beginnings for the Marsh Pride, tiny leopard cubs and coalitions of cheetah hunting close to the camps.
